“I want to buy a gun.” I hear it all the time. “That’s great” I say, “What do you want to get?” “I don’t know” they reply. I can’t tell you how many times my conversations with people start out like that. So what do you want to get? The only way to answer that is to figure out what you want to do with it. There are tons of guns out there, and many are made with a special purpose in mind. Whether it is hunting, target shooting, personal defense, home defense, military use, or others, no gun does it all.
So what do you want to do with a gun? In future posts I will talk about choosing guns for hunting or other sporting purposes, but today let’s talk about defense. Many people want to defend their home or themselves with a gun. There are 3 types of firearms to choose from for defense, shotguns, rifles and pistols, and each have their pros and cons.
The next thing to consider is where you want to defend yourself with a gun. This may seem like a silly question at first but consider the laws where you live. You do know the laws right? Maybe you should start there. But in most places, the laws are different concerning carrying firearms in public and what you can do in your home or on your property. At home, shotguns or rifles could be used in defense, but both are impractical out in public and in many places, illegal. Most, but not all states allow some form of concealed carry (most requiring a permit). If you want to carry a firearm concealed, most likely you are talking about a pistol. My next three posts will cover the pros and cons of a pistol, rifle and shotgun for defense.
